Do the Mets Have What it Takes to Become Champions Once Again?
Tue, 03/25/2008 - 19:59
Last season was definitely a disappointment for the Mets. They were one of the favored teams to compete and they dropped the ball at the end. They have two of the best young players in baseball with Reyes and Wright. Those are two players you can certainly build a championship team around. Pitching again was the main reason they haven’t been as successful as they should have been.
This season Pedro Martinez might be healthy and they just brought in the best pitcher in baseball, Johan Santana. If Pedro rebounds from his injury plagued season and Santana lives up to most of the hype than the Mets certainly should be contenders. Will it happen though, that is the biggest question.
There are two primary questions that need to be answered for the Mets. Is their bullpen deep enough and is their batting order deep enough? The way analysts and fans are predicting their fate for the season it would be a monumental failure for them if they don’t even make it to the World Series.
I have a feeling that this might be the year. I had a similar feeling at the beginning of the year when the Mets last met the Yankees in the World Series. I remember telling my Uncle, who is a huge Yankees fan, that I thought this was the year we could see the Yankees and Mets face each other in the World Series. The Mets didn’t stand a chance in the end but we will see what happens this year. I am not sure about the Yankees but they could always surprise. Nevertheless, this is the year for the Mets and fans in New York won’t stand for anything else but winning a championship, I certainly don’t want to be around if it doesn’t happen.
